Thinking of a road trip in a motorhome hire New Zealand? Do you know where you’ll be headed to? Why not consider a trip to Dunedin? If you’ve never been there before or don’t know why you should take a trip there, we’ll tell you some reasons why.

First of all, it’s the perfect destination to travel to in a motorhome hire New Zealand. Second of all, it’s an underrated city that deserves much more recognition than it gets—which may actually be a good thing, as it keeps the mass tourism away.

Are you considering a trip around the South Island? Make sure to include this small yet happening city on your trip itinerary. Here are some of the things we think you shouldn’t do:

Don’t miss out on making friends with true-to-heart Kiwis in Dunedin. Kiwis are a fun crowd but you won’t always get this “vibe” in bigger and tourist-filled places as the locals are a bit tuckered out from mass tourism. The great thing about Dunedin is that you’ll find the real Kiwis that live in a really great place.

Don’t forget to spend some time in Otago Peninsula near Dunedin. There is a lot of nature in the city but if you want to get some great views of the ocean, head on over to the coast along the Otago Peninsula. There you’ll find beauty galore, as well as animal sanctuaries, making it a must visit place for those who love wildlife.

Don’t fill up on food that isn’t good at home, save some space for Dunedin eats. While we usually suggest saving money and eating at home and buying groceries, we may have to suggest something different this time around. Dunedin has a lot of great eats for great prices, so if you’re in the mood for someone else to cook your meals, head on over the Black Pearl of Dunedin or try Eli’s Bar-B-Que, just to get started. Like many other cities in New Zealand, you can find a decent variety of cuisines in Dunedin, so whether you like Asian cuisine or Italian food, or even American grub, there are several options for you to get your favorite kind of food while in the city.

Don’t miss out on snapping shots of the abundance of street art found in Dunedin. If there were ever an ideal place to take an iconic picture for your social media, it would be either a shot in nature or one in front of street art. Dunedin has options for both—especially street art. It may seem like around every corner, you’ll find some type of street art. Some are okay but the majority of them are amazing and you can be sure that you’ll find one that you’d be more happy than pose with. In fact, many of the pieces on walls here are done by renowned artists, such as Phlegm and Bezt and are even named works of art, so when we say that you’ll find great pieces of art, we aren’t lying.

You MOST certainly don’t want to miss out on getting to know the adorable hoiho (little yellow eyed penguins). Okay, there are a lot of animals that you can see while in Dunedin and the surrounding areas, but we think that you shouldn’t miss out on getting to meet the hoiho in person. These adorable yellow-eyed penguins are so worth your time and maybe even one of the main reasons why you should visit the city and the area nearby. You can get to see these penguins at the Penguin Place which is located on the Otago Peninsula. This may not be the most fun activity for everyone but if you’re anything like me, then you can be certain that you won’t be disappointed. They are a rare breed, so if you have the chance to see them, don’t miss out visiting Penguin Place.

In Conclusion

From visiting penguins to enjoying good food, there are many reasons why you should visit Dunedin. It may not be as talked about as some other spots like Auckland or Christchurch, although we would have no idea why. We love the relaxed vibe, the chill atmosphere, the friendly people and the great activities to enjoy.

The list above only has a few of the places that you should visit while in Dunedin and things you should do. You shouldn’t miss out on any one of these experiences and there are many other things you can do as well.

If you’re already road tripping in a motorhome hire New Zealand, then make sure to include Dunedin on your list of places to see. It’s close to a lot of highly popular areas so you’ll only have to go out of your way–just a little bit.
